|
WHY MISS KATHLEEN AND HER STAFF?
Miss Kathleen has been instructing dance for over 18 years! She grew up in La Crosse, Wisconsin dancing at Marilyn School of Dance, under the direction of Suzanne Swanson Wagner. She was captain of their performing troop, D'Vision Street Dancers and traveled to many competitions, conventions and performance trips as a student, as well became an assistant and student teacher at age 14. Always being active in music and theater, she moved to New York City in 1993 to attend the prestigious school, The American Musical and Dramatic Academy. After graduating in Musical Theater, she next toured the country with American Family Theater in two shows, Beauty and The Beast and Dinosaur Mountain and appeared in two Off Off Broadway showcases in New York City. Kathleen moved to Utah to instruct dance and choreograph musicals as well as perform in several professional theater productions in Salt Lake City, including the Utah Premier of "Phantom". Miss Kathleen next moved to Oregon to continue her career in the arts. She began her Oregon teaching career at the Lake Oswego Academy of Dance as a core instructor. She took a break from teaching to perform as a headlining singer on the Mississippi Queen Steamboat out of New Oreleans. Upon her return, she founded Van De Veere Productions, a dance, drama and vocal program in 2000, offering classes in 8 locations around the Portland area. She believes in continuing education for herself by attending conventions and working as a national show director a national competition. She is a professional singer, has released 2 solo CD's and took "Best Actress in a Musical" for her performance as Sally Bowls in "Cabaret". As a musical theater choreographer, she has won Best Choreography Awards in 2005,2007, and most recently 2008 for "Chicago" She is still active in community, college and professional theater as a performer and choreographer. As a sought after master choreographer, she travels the United States teaching master classes in all types of dance, voice and musical theater. She is also the dance director for Extreme Sports Camps that provides master dance classes for NIKE, and is active with Live On Stage, a Portland Theater Group.
Miss Kathleen is thrilled to be the National Director of FIERCE, THE ULTIMATE DANCE CONVENTION, with partners Stacy J and Kim Borgaro. The convention combines unique historical sites and dance workshops. Check out the new convention at www.fierceconvention.com

Miss Kathleen and Madeline&Emily ROCK Hollywood August 2005
Miss Kathleen attended the first annual FAMEUS Competition in Hollywood with Junior dance members, Emily and Madeline . This was the first nationals of its kind hosted and produced by Debbie Allen, a well known Hollywood choreographer and performer. We were also lucky to have Gracie along for the ride as our biggest fan! Emily competed in the junior division with her routines, Lose My Breath and He's A Dream. Although she did not place in the top honors, she danced her personal best and looked great! Madeline and Emily also competed their duet, Millie and took a 1st place! Madeline competed three songs in the vocal division for juniors with Out Here On My Own, Cowboy Take Me Away, and Don't Rain On My Parade. She took 1st place in both the country division and the musical theater division! Miss Kathleen competed three songs as well, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Cabaret, and Out Tonight. Miss Kathleen took 1st place in the jazz, rock, and musical theater divisions in the professional/teacher division. This nationals combined the best of the best talent representing almost every state in the country. Madleine and Miss Kathleen both placed in the top four with their musical theater songs to go on to the FAMEUS CHALLENGE. This was a gala night with several television and film celebs, agents, casting directors, and producers. Madeline and Miss Kathleen were able to recompete their songs for judges like Raven (from That's So Raven), Dave Scott (choreographer of You Got Served) and Debbie Allen herself as well as representives from major record lables. In the gala, Madeline took 3rd overall high score with Don't Rain On My Parade in the junior vocal division and Miss Kathleen took 2nd overall high score with Cabaret in the professional/teacher division! Wow! What a blast! Here is the best news, last week Debbie Allen called Madeline to invite her to a special audition with Disney the first week of September. WHAT ARE SESSIONS AND HOW LONG DO THEY RUN?
Sessions are lessons broken down into groups. Sessions may be a combination of 4,5,6,7 or 8 lessons. Please check your local parks and recreation guide for prices, dates and times. Please note that some locations have a week off in between sessions. Miss Kathleen and the recreations centers can not give refunds for classes missed due to illness, vacations, and forgetfullness. You will never pay for a holiday that we would have off during the session, and any days off will be listed! We take usual breaks for Christmas, Spring Break and time off in the summer. Dancers need to be registered by the first day of the session to reserve their spot in class. Advanced registration is recommended because some classes can be very popular and there is limited space. You can always register through your local Parks and Recreation department.
DO I NEED TO REGISTER FOR EVERY SESSION?
Yes! On or before the first day of the session.
SHOULD I STAY AND WATCH THE CLASS?
This is becoming an issue in some locations. In all studios I have worked in the past, parents are not allowed to watch the class. This is for several reasons. First, it can be difficult for dancers to concentrate with observers in the room. Next, some parents will try and coach dancers from the sidelines. Another reason, noise from visiting or cell phone conversations. Next, some dancers feel embarrassed if they make a mistake on a new step with a huge audience watching them. Finally, there can be a problem with little brothers and sisters trying to run into the class. I do agree with all the reasons listed above, so consider these things before you decide to watch the class. If you in fact do stay, please respect the students and instructor by practicing silence. That way, we can all help the dancers be the best they can be and get the most out of the class!
WHAT IF MY LITTLE DANCER CRIES THE FIRST DAY?
This could happen. It is OK. Parents may try and take the class if the little one is scared. If this persists more than three weeks, the dancer may need to wait a year and try it again. This is common with the younger first time dancers. No worries!
NO CELL PHONES IN CLASS?
Yes, please turn off your cell phones during class, this goes for students and parents. Students may check messages between classes if there is an emergency.
WHEN AND WHERE ARE THE DANCE RECITALS?
McMinnville and West Linn locations will put on full dance recitals.
WHEN ARE AUDITIONS FOR THE DANCE TEAMS?
Auditions will be held in the summer months. Juniors, New Stars, Hot Shots, & Mac Attack range in ages 8-13 and the Van De Veere Dancers between 13-adult. There are special requirements for the Elite Team auditions. Be prepared to show off all your dancing skills as auditions will include ballet, jazz, tap and hip hop. You do not have to have a dance already prepared to audition. Dancers will learn choreography at the audition. Please check back for audition dates and times. Auditions again will be held in June 2008 for our 2008-2009 performance teams.
|
Miss Kathleen and her staff offer classes for all ages and performance opportunites as well. Our dancers have performed at the Blazer Game, Yamhill Flyers International Basketball Games, Linfield College Games, and more! Dance team opportunities are coming up again this summer! The teams perform in the competitions and attend a summer dance trip. There will be auditions for the following teams again in June of 2008.
